Virgin Australia has announced that it will be offering a cadet scheme for aspiring pilots in 2012.

Successful candidates, upon completion of their course will be offered First Officer positions on the ATR 72 with partner airline Skywest. Following a two year internship with Skywest it is expected the cadets will move to the companies fleet of 777-300ER  as Cruise First Officers.

Virgin Australia has put out tenders to training organizations and is expected to name the successful provider before the end of the year.

To achieve their ambitious plans the airline is conducting open days throughout the globe with the aim of recruiting the worlds most talented first officers.

It has a large fleet already, with 148 planes including 15 Airbus A380 super-jumbos, and plans to grow to 169 next year, with six more A380s and 13 Boeing 777-300ERs.

The airline has another 200 planes on order, including 75 more A380s and 48 long-range Boeing 777-300ERs.

Whilst the number of new recruits is impressive the competition is going to be tough. Only those pilots who meet their minimum requirements and are fully prepared to tackle the grueling interview process will find themselves with a letter of offer.

The V Australia interview process is based on the behavioural interview concept and is usually conducted by the General Manager Of Operations, The Line Ops Manager and a representative from the Human Resources Department.

Many pilots have come unstuck during the Behavioural Interview purely through directing their preparation in the wrong area. Qantas's website sets the minimum requirements as:

    * Minimum 18 years of age

    * Height between 163 - 183cm

    * Australian permanent residency and a passport ensuring unrestricted access to all Qantas ports of call with at least 12 months validity

    * Current Senior First Aid Certificate with a validity of 12 months at time of application

    * Responsible Service of Alcohol 'Statement of Attainment', which you would need to have by the end of the recruitment process

    * Strong commitment to customer service and recent experience in a face-to-face role

    * Demonstrated empathy in service with people from a variety of cultures and countries

    * An excellent level of health and fitness, for example, being able to swim 50 metres fully clothed

    * A willingness to relocate, as required, to any location.

    * Experience in Food and Beverage service is an advantage and a demonstrated fluency in at least one of the following priority languages will offer a distinct advantage:

          o Mandarin

          o Cantonese

          o Japanese

    * The ability to speak one of the following languages are also desirable:
